Position of the FC relative to the CG is more or less critical depending on which flight modes you use most of the time. If you fly Rate, then the FC does not need to be on the CG. Every part of the frame rotates at the same rate in all axes regardless of the position of the gyros on the FC. If you fly Attitude mode you'll want to get the FC on the CG. That's because it uses the accelerometers that can be confused by any abnormal G-loading, such as centrifugal forces which the FC will see as the frame rotates when the FC is not right on the CG.
